Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park

I made a trip over to the Mount Pleasant memorial Waterfront Park today. Construction crews are there and making some very good progress. The park area behind the Covention/welcoming center can now be seen and is being landscaped with grass and trees. Playground equipment is also visible.

Here is a picture of one of the two buildings that are at the front of the park. This i think is the visitors center or the sweetgrass cultural center. The picture below you can see some of the playground equipment with the charleston harbor in the background.

This picture os one of the 3 or 4 Mount Pleasant Memorial Park logo signs erected at different locations through the park. This one is opposite the visitor center and is along the walking trail that runs under the Arthur Ravenel, Jr bridge.
This picture is a view of the entrance to the fishing pier under the bridge

Here a long range picture of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr bridge with the end of the fishing pier visible
And the entrance or roadway leading into the park area. Their is a sign called Harry Hallman Blvd. But it is also called Wingo Way. This road runs out into Patriots Point Blvd. and right before you enter this area is the Tides Condos

The fishing pier is one of the longest in the southeast region. At the park there will also be a visitor's center and waterfront reception hall, a war memorial thatwill include a fountain and a sculpture and areas to play and a place to picnic.

Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park Pictures

The Charleston South Carolina Area is soon to be getting a huge tourist attraction. The new Mount Pleasant Park, under construction currently, is starting to take shape.
here are some recent pictures taken of the construction of the new Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. Recently this area has been in the news as the Ginn Co. has proposed to build a 36 acre commerical area known as Bridgeside. The proposal will include retail shops, Hotels, restaurants, condominiums and a river walkway open to the public.

The park is situated near the base of the new bridge between Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Close by to the park is the towering condo development called The Tides. nearby are several hotels including the Holiday Inn, and even the Charleston Harbor Hilton is within walking distance. The new park could be a great shot in the arm for Mount Pleasant tourism as it is set to offer fishing and other activities. The fishing pier is slated to be one of the longest in the southeaster United States. The Charleston South Carolina tourism traffic is quite larger than most give credit. This addition to the lowcountrys attractions only enhances the tourists time spent here and in the process local residients have a quite nice place to take their families.

As you can see they have a ways to go before the scheduled opening July 4th 2009

Bridgeside

Bridgeside is the new proposed commercial area by the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. The area is set to include hotels, shops, meeting facilities. Bridgeside is being developed by the Ginn Co.
"The waterfront at Bridgeside would basically be open to the public," said Will Bagwell, project manager for developer the Ginn Co. He said Bridgeside would have a 1,000-foot-long waterfront walk.
The developer wants to build 180,000 square feet of office space, 120,000 square feet of retail space, 30,000 square feet of restaurant space, 565 residential units, 700 hotel rooms and a 900-space parking deck. The project would mean $8.3 million in one-time developer "impact fees" paid to the town-Source Post and Courier, read the full article here

Ginn Co. Looks to commercalize Mount Pleasant

A hopeful boost in economic revenue may be on the way for the Town of Mount Pleasant if and when the Ginn company organizes and develops Bridgeside. However, There appears to be a growing opposition in the area around the park and it's development. Many Mount Pleasant residents would prefer more greenspace than an overbuilding supply of commercial buildings. As Mount Pleasant rapidly advances in other areas, it is losing it's greenspace at a worrisome pace. And also losing it's warm hometown feeling.
